As I’ve been repreaching the solas messages in big church the past few weeks, the principle of sola scriptura keeps banging around in my head more than any other. As we’ve said many times already it is the first and foundational doctrine of the Reformation; without it, the Dark Ages would have continued. Here are some of the things we might ask God to do for and in us relating to His Word:
remind us:
- of its exalted importance
- of its rightful place
- of its divine authority
- of its total sufficiency
- of our neglect in reading it
- of our ignorance in knowing what’s in it
- of our carelessness in interpreting it
- of our desire to be entertained rather than edified by it
- of our preacher shopping rather than thankful worship through studying it
- of our pick and choose application rather than quick obedience to it
- of getting direction from other sources
- of giving direction to other places
- to read and diligently work and carefully obey it
- to have not need to be ashamed of our interpretation of it
- to take pains and be absorbed in it
- to trust it to prepare us for every good work
- to proclaim it when it’s popular and when it isn’t
help us to value it more than gold help us to savor it like honey may we cry for it like newborns cry for milk
and let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, according to Your Word, for the sake of Your glory, amen.
